Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen Cancels Four Concessions in the Prey Lang Forest
On August 6th the Phnom Penh Post reported the following VICTORY:
“ In a rare victory for those battling to preserve the Prey Lang forest, the Cambodian government has cancelled four economic land concessions (ELCs) in the area totaling more than 40,000 hectares that threatened pristine ecosystems . . . [the concessions] are located in the middle of evergreen and semi-evergreen forest inside 'the largest low-land [contiguous evergreen] forest in Southeast Asia' – Prey Lang. ”"
On August 11, 2012, the Prey Lang Community Network posted this message:
“ We in the Prey Lang Community Network and Friends of the Forest welcome the Royal Government of Cambodia’s (RGC) cancellation of concessions in Prey Lang’s core area last week. However, we remain concerned with rampant illegal logging andthe continuation of other concessions that have destroyed areas of dense forest. ”
This week, over 70 villagers patrolling the Prey Lang forest found more evidence of illegal logging in the form of hundreds of cubic meters of cut timber and several hectares of cleared land.
